Abstract

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as a prominent destination for skilled professionals seeking international employment opportunities, supported by sustained economic growth, strong inflows of foreign direct investment, and progressive labour market reforms. This paper examines the UAE’s skilled employment landscape from a job seeker’s perspective, with particular emphasis on economic conditions, labour demand, entry pathways, and early-stage employment dynamics. The paper begins by outlining the UAE’s macroeconomic environment and its role in generating employment across diversified non-oil sectors. It then analyses recent policy initiatives aimed at attracting global talent, notably the Job Seeker Visa, which enables qualified professionals to enter the country and search for employment without prior sponsorship. The discussion further explores the probation period under the UAE Labour Law, highlighting its regulatory framework, implications for job mobility, and significance in shaping employer-employee alignment. Finally, the paper offers practical insights into strategically managing probation, identifying retention signals, and making informed decisions about confirmation or transition. By integrating policy analysis with labour market realities, the study provides a clearer understanding of skilled labour market entry in the UAE, and it offers relevant guidance for job seekers.
